Video: Elder Cook, Other Faith Leaders on Faith and Government
Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints welcomed members of the New York City Commission of Religious Leaders to Church headquarters in June 2022.
The commission is a group of religious leaders from many faith traditions who recognize and support the interface between religion and government.
This Church News video, titled “A Righteous Mobile,” features interviews with several commission members speaking about the importance of religious freedom.
Without faith in the public square, “we really go through tough times,” said Quentin L. Cook of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, a Chief Rabbi of New York, said, “We have a fundamental right to practice our faith without anyone else interfering with that practice.
Rabbi Diana Gerson said that the children of God “are all connected by the same Creator. We are all bound by our own faith. And we are all different facets of this beauty that is God.
Elder Cook said religious freedom is important for believers and non-believers alike. “We think that’s a just cause,” he said. “It is a motive that is supported by … scripture and it is something that must be preserved.”
