Vick’s school record highlights men’s track and field day at NCAA East preliminaries
BLOOMINGTON, Indiana – The Navy men’s track and field team concluded competition in the NCAA East Preliminaries at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind. Sophomore Brahmir Vik (Middletown, Del.) posted a school record in the 110m hurdles with a time of 13.71 (-1.5) to highlight the afternoon for the contenders.
“It’s hard to be disappointed when you set a public relations and school record,” said the director of navy/cross country athletics Jamie Cook said. “Brahmir is a competitor so he’s upset that he’s not progressing, but finishing the season with a school record is pretty good. He worked hard and had a great year. You have to keep going through the process, try to improve every day, and have some motivation to move forward.”
Vick finished fifth in his heat with his school record performance. The time was four hundredths of a second faster than his previous record of 13.75, which he set earlier this year at the Princeton Elite Invitational. Vick finished 13th overall, narrowly missing out on qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor Championship by one-hundredth of a second.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Navy began the competition with Cole Bailey (Yukon, Okla.) in the high jump. The elder posted a height of 2.00m (6-06.75), erasing his first attempt at the mark. The height was his fifth best of the season.
“Cole had a great career and had a tremendous opportunity to compete here today,” Cook said of his senior. “Overall you have to take away the positives and we represented ourselves and the Academy very well.”
On Saturday, the Navy Women’s competition opens with Taylor Buchanan (Columbia, SC) and Hannah Lowenstein (Pompano Beach, Fla.) competing in the high jump at 2:30 p.m. Ellie Abraham (Brookings, SD) and Winter Boese (Clark, Colo.) close the day for the aspirants in the 3000m steeplechase at 5:40 p.m.
“I think it’s going to be awesome,” Cook said of the women’s competition. “These athletes are going to compete for their school and for themselves. I feel pretty confident for tomorrow.”
Free live video and live results will be available throughout the game.
