If you’re planning on partaking in the Friday the 13th tattoo ritual this year, be prepared for it to be a little less conventional than you expected before the COVID-19 pandemic.
Every Friday the 13th, tattoo parlors across the country throw a marathon party. It usually involves long lines and tattoos at a reduced cost. Guests choose a small design from a flash sheet — a set of pre-made tattoos designed, often, by in-house artists — and have it inked. Demand can make artists sweat, with some stores open 24 hours a day.
This setup isn’t what you’re going to see everywhere next Friday, though. Fewer stores are participating, and many still have precautions in place due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The tradition was popularized by artist Oliver Peck in Dallas. He owns previously said that he was not the first, but he made it an event. Now you’ll find it in just about any town with a tattoo shop. Often, you’ll find small tattoos cost $13 plus a “lucky” (and obligatory) tip of $7. Some places cost $31 and a mandatory tip of $9. Other lounges will go even closer to what you typically pay on other days. Those interested in participating should note that all performers are happy to accept tips above the required price.
With tattoos priced this low, it’s worth remembering that you have to be good to your artist. They often don’t earn much on your tattoo when they offer deep discounts. “Shop does not make $$ on Friday the 13th,” New York’s Daredevil Tattoo previously wrote on its site. “It actually cost us $$ and we’re very tired at the end of the day, so we really appreciate the nice words and all the great reviews you can leave us online.” Additionally, artists will appreciate the added financial rewards, especially when performing during a pandemic.
Be sure to check out the stores. in advance. Not all stores participate and many don’t care about tradition. Paul Collurafici of the Tattoo Factory in Chicago, who doesn’t do Friday the 13th tattoos, previously told Thrillist that you should “watch out for shortcuts.” Participating stores will encounter many customers throughout the day. “Counters and chairs should be wiped down with disinfectant wipes after each tattoo,” he says. “Needles and tubes must be in sealed sterile packages and opened in front of [you]. New ink flowed as [you] watch.” That was advice for participating pre-pandemic, so be doubly sure you’re seeing that cleanliness at this point.
With all that in mind, here are stores across the country that offer Friday the 13th tattoos. Be sure to check with your local salon for details, as the procedure varies by location. to another and details may change at the last minute.
